How to turn a podcast episode into short clips, step by step
Short answer: read the transcript, mark the moments that make sense on their own, cut them on whole sentences, frame them for vertical, caption them accurately, level the audio and check every file before posting. Most of the time goes into choosing moments, not into cutting.
1. Start from the best source you have
Use the video recording, not a compressed export of it. Higher quality in means fewer artifacts after you reframe to vertical. If the source already has captions or graphics burned into the bottom of the picture, they can collide with new captions and get cut off when you crop, so a clean version is better.
2. Get a transcript and read it
Listening through a full episode is slow. A transcript lets you skim for ideas. Read it for claims, answers, stories and strong opinions rather than for everything that sounds interesting.
3. Mark candidate moments
A good candidate is one idea, understandable without the minutes before it, and ends on a point that lands. Write down the start and end time of each candidate and a one-line description of what it says.
4. Choose moments that differ
Pick moments from different parts of the episode and with different topics. Five clips that all make the same point are one clip with extra work. Avoid overlaps.
5. Write the opening
The first seconds decide whether anyone stays. State the point or the question straight away. On-screen text for the first line helps people who watch without sound.
6. Frame for vertical
A landscape recording does not become a good vertical clip by cropping the centre. Follow the speaker, keep faces inside the frame, and keep text away from the edges where platform buttons and captions sit. For two-person conversations, choose a layout that shows who is speaking.
7. Add accurate captions
Captions should match what is said, appear when the word is spoken and stay short enough to read at a glance. Check names and technical terms by hand. See how to add captions to short videos.
8. Level the audio
Make speech clear and evenly loud. We aim for about −14 LUFS on finished clips, a common level for online video. Remove obvious room noise.
9. Check before you post
Watch each clip twice: once with sound and once without. Look at the first three seconds, the last second, the captions, and whether the clip starts and ends on a whole sentence.
10. Export every format you need
Vertical 9:16 is the main format for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. Square, 4:5 and landscape versions suit feeds and LinkedIn. See video sizes for Reels, Shorts, TikTok and LinkedIn.

How many clips can I get from one podcast episode?
There is no fixed number. Clip what stands on its own. Some episodes hold several strong moments, others only a few. Our service builds up to eight clips per episode.
Can I turn an audio-only podcast into shorts?
Short-form platforms need pictures. You can use a video version of the recording, or add visuals such as a waveform, but a video recording gives the best result.
How long should each clip be?
Long enough to land one idea, short enough to keep it clean. See our guide on clip length.
