Video sizes for Reels, Shorts, TikTok and LinkedIn

Short answer: four picture formats cover almost every platform: 9:16 vertical, 4:5 portrait, 1:1 square and 16:9 landscape. Make the vertical version first, then adapt the others separately instead of cropping blindly.

FormatTypical sizeTypically used for
9:16 vertical1080 × 1920Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Stories
4:5 portrait1080 × 1350Feed posts on Instagram and LinkedIn
1:1 square1080 × 1080Feed posts, older layouts, previews
16:9 landscape1920 × 1080YouTube, websites, LinkedIn, presentations

Platforms update their recommendations, so check each platform's current specifications before a campaign.

Do not just crop

Cropping a landscape clip to the centre cuts off speakers and moves the action out of frame. Re-compose each format: follow the speaker for vertical, keep both people visible for landscape, and move captions with the composition.

Safe areas

In vertical video, the platform interface covers the top and bottom of the picture. Keep text and faces inside the middle of the frame. We keep text at least 320 pixels from the top and bottom and 110 pixels from the sides on a 1080 by 1920 canvas.

Export settings that work almost everywhere

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is accepted everywhere. Export at the native size above instead of scaling up a smaller file, which adds artifacts.

Every CliprAuto clip is delivered in all four formats. See turn long YouTube videos into Shorts, Reels and TikToks.

Questions and answers

What is the best video size for Reels, Shorts and TikTok?

9:16 vertical, typically 1080 by 1920 pixels.

What size should I use for LinkedIn video?

LinkedIn accepts several formats. Vertical or 4:5 takes more space on a phone feed, and 16:9 suits desktop and presentations. Check LinkedIn's current guidance.

Can I use one file for every platform?

A vertical 9:16 file works on the short-video platforms. Feeds and landscape placements are better served by their own versions.
